Fazenda Klem, Brazil
This coffee is grown at Fazenda Klem, located in the Matas de Minas region in the East of Brazil. Fazenda Klem is part of an Atlantic forest, located at heights between 900-1250 meters above sea level. The combination of altitude, mountain climate and rainfall index are the perfect conditions to produce high quality coffee. The farm is a real family business. Nagipe Viana Klem started working in coffee in the ‘50s. He has been focusing on environmental issues and quality coffee ever since. Nagipes children Ceasar, Márcio, Sérgio and Claudio continue his work from 2010 and on, improving the quality of the coffee even more. They invested in pulpers, dryers and greenhouses with African drying beds and new drying patios. They also made the transition to organic certified coffee. In 2017, Fazenda Klem became 3rd in Brazil’s Cup of Excellence, reaching 91+ points in the contest. Ceasar Klem explains: “We are proud of our origins, our family, our coffee and we always want to bring our coffee to every table”.
The farm doesn’t only grow coffee, but also avocados and bananas to stimulate a lively ecosystem. The family works with great environmental awareness, planting the crops in ecologically correct manner, with respect for native areas and obtaining greater biological control, preserving springs, flora and fauna. Fazenda Klem’s crop starts in June. This is early for Brazil and gives the coffee more time to mature and to absorb sugars. The coffee is packed in videplast bags and are designed to prolong the quality of the coffee. Fazenda Klem works together with 50 partners, all responsible for their own part of the farm. It has high ethical standards when it comes to their relationships with employees and service providers. They follow strict criteria on labor standards and job security. They also provide means for social advancement, integrating them in the community and stimulating education and development of all involved.
Dimtu Tero, Ethiopia
Gusto currently consists of two Ethiopian coffees, both coming from the Dimtu Tero farm, but differently processed: natural and washed. Both are 90+ scoring coffees!
Dimtu Tero is located in the Tero farmers Village in the Odo Shakisso district, in the Guji Zone and known for producing consistently high quality coffees. Getachew Zeleke, founder of the Dimtu farm, strives to become the leader in quality, traceability and sustainability in the Guji zone. To reach this goal, Getachew works closely together with 136 small-scale coffee farmers in the area, who all strive for the same goals. He rewards the smallholders with premiums on top of the regular cherry price, gives them interest-free loans, imported coffee seedlings, processing equipment and training. All these farmers make sure their coffee production practices are conducted in an organic, socially responsible and environmentally friendly manner.
Through innovative ways, Getachew constantly works on improving the quality of his coffee. The shade nets he installed on his farm for example, help to slowly dry the cherries, which stimulates developing more flavour. And that can definitely be tasted in the cup!
